APA Anthology Citation Examples

A

An anthology is a collection of works assembled into one format. For example, essays published by different authors centered around a theme are often published in a single book. Poetry is often published in an anthology. Using writings from anthologies is a good way to find related sources for your research paper. Although citing anthologies in APA style may seem confusing at first, it’s actually very easy as you’ll follow the basic format of citing a chapter in an edited book.

One Work in a Collection

The way you cite a resource varies slightly depending on whether it is in print or on a website.

Print Format

The format for citing a print resource in your APA reference list, as would be the case when citing a chapter or entry in an anthology, is as follows:

Author, A.A., & Author, B.B. (Year). Title of chapter or entry. In A. Editor, B. Editor, & C. Editor (Eds.). Title of book (pp. xxx-xxx). Location: Publisher.

The corresponding in-text citation is very simple:

(Author & Author, Year)

Print Example – Reference List

Nieto, S. (2004). Racism, discrimination and the expectations of the students’ achievement. In Canestrari, A. S., & Marlowe, B. A. (Eds), Educational foundations: An anthology of critical readings (pp. 44-63). New York, NY: Sage.

Website Format

The format when citing an online resource adds the URL at the end without a period:

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of chapter or entry. In A. Editor, B. Editor, & C. Editor (Eds.). Title of book (pp. xxx-xxx). Retrieved from http://www.xxxxxx
