Magazine articles can be a source of accurate information for your APA research. Published monthly or weekly, magazines offer a current viewpoint of newly discovered research results. However, it is important to look only for reliable authoritative sources. For example, well-established publications like Psychology Today and Time are good ways to keep up with current events. Citing magazines in APA style follows the periodical basic format.
Print Magazine Citation Format
How you format a magazine citation in APA style depends on the number of authors and the frequency of publication. In all cases, remember that the article title is in sentence case and does not go in quotation marks. The magazine title should be in title case and italicized.
One Author
When you have a print article with one author, follow this format:
Author, A.A. (year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, xx, pp-pp.
Examples
Grant, A. (2020). Women teaching women. Ministering to Women. 4.
Bottoms, L. (2020). Building community, offering hope. Ministering to Women. 24.
Monthly Magazines
If you are citing an article from a monthly magazine, be sure to add the month to your entry:
Author, A.A. (year, month). Title of article. Title of Periodical, xx, pp-pp.
Examples
Larmer, B (2017, October) Without a home and without hope. National Geographic, 232(4), 26-29.
Raygorodetsky, G. (2017, October). Life on the edge. National Geographic, 232(4),108-115
Weekly Magazines
When you cite weekly magazines, include the full date of issue.
Author, A.A. (year, month day). Title of article. Title of Periodical, xx, pp-pp.
Examples
Chow, A. (2019, June 10). The rise of Tik Tok. Time, 193(21-22), 88-91.
Vesoulis, A. (2019, May 27). Work life imbalance: A family’s value. Time, 193(20), 32 -37.
More Than One Author
If the magazine article has more than one author, list the entry as follows. Use an ampersand (& symbol) before the final author:
Author, A.A., Author, B.B., & Author, C.C. (year, month). Title of article. Title of Periodical, xx, pp-pp.
Examples
Marshall L., & Beneroch, R. (2019, January/February). Surgical solution? WebMD. 54.
Knoth, D., & Cederblom, T. (2020). Who is the one: Women stepping out in relational evangelism. Ministering to Women. 20.
No Author
When the magazine article has no listed author, start the APA citation entry with the article title.
Examples
As rationing begins, Cuba braces for economic impact from Venezuela crisis. (2019, May 27). Time. 13.
Next generation leaders.(2019, May 27). Time, 193 (20). 38-49.
Online Magazine Article Citation
Citing online magazine articles is much the same. However, you will need to add the retrieval source at the end. Do not place a colon after “Retrieved from.”
Author, A.A. (year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, xx, pp-pp. Retrieved from https://www.xxxxxxxxx.com
Examples
Haseltine, E. (2018, November 6). 7 extraordinary feats your brain can perform. Psychology Today. Retrieved from https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/201811/7-extraordinary-feats-your-brain-can-perform

- Look for the volume and issue number on the content page of the magazine
- Not all magazines have volume and issue numbers. So, leave them off the citation if they’re not available
- Include “The,” “A” or “An” if they are part of the official title of the magazine
- Do not add a period after the website address
